Red Meat and Livestock

The Australian red meat and livestock industry encompasses the production and processing of beef cattle, sheep, goats and buffalo, for export and domestic consumption. Beef cattle and sheep are the dominant industries.

The authority to deal with particular red meat industry issues is vested in a number of jurisdictions:

  • The Australian Government is responsible for issues that have national or international implications.
  • State and territory governments are responsible for day to day production, operational and infrastructural matters.
  • Relevant representative or peak industry bodies are responsible for industry or agri-political issues.
  • Industry service companies have responsibility for marketing, promotion and research and development activities.
