Land and Salinity

DAFF supports sustainable land management and dryland salinity management, as well as other natural resource management issues, through the Caring for our Country initiative.

Rangelands

DAFF is working to achieve sustainable land management in the rangelands, which cover almost 75 per cent of Australia.

Rangelands extend across low rainfall and variable climates, including arid, semi-arid, and some seasonally high rainfall areas. Pastoral industries are the dominant agricultural users in the rangelands, through extensive grazing on native vegetation.

Salinity

Salt is a natural part of the Australian landscape but can become a serious problem when carried by water to agricultural areas, the general environment and infrastructure.

DAFF coordinates national investment to manage dryland salinity through major programs and initiatives, research, advice, and monitoring and assessment.

Environmental Management Systems

An environmental management systems (EMS) is a systematic approach that can be used by any enterprise or organisation to continuously improve its business management to achieve efficiencies and better environmental outcomes.

Information on completed EMS National Pilot Program, the EMS National Framework and other DAFF EMS plans and guides.

More information about EMS is available on the Department of the Environment, Heritage, Water and the Arts website.
